Memories of Tom Cheek

The many tributes have poured in for Blue Jays radio play-by-play man Tom Cheek, who passed away far too soon, Oct. 9, 2005 at the age of 66. On Sunday, Cheek was welcomed to Cooperstown as winner of the annual Ford C. Frick Award for broadcast excellence.His wife Shirley, a native of the Eastern Townships in Quebec, delivered a moving speech in Cooperstown on Saturday that would have made Tom proud. She ended with these touching words, a tribute to her husband’s iconic walkoff call in Game 6 of the ’93 World Series. 

I was a 21-year-old assistant in Expos’ public relations when I first met Tom, filling in for Dave Van Horne on Wednesdays at old Jarry Park, driving up from his Vermont home whenever Canada’s other Frick Award winner was on television with the Expos’ game of the week. After two seasons pinch-hitting for the best, the Blue Jays entered play in the American League. Tom was their choice to be lead man in the radio booth, emerging with his own understated style, built on a clear love of the game. Canadian fans in Montreal and Toronto have been blessed with two radio Hall of Famers. 

When I journeyed down the 401 from Montreal in 1995 to begin with the Star, Tom was one of the first to welcome me and offer his help with anything that I needed. He sincerely respected the print media and made sure that whether he liked what you wrote, whether he disagreed or not, he would never shy away, never be reluctant to be seen talking to even the most out-of-favour writers. 

Cheek was confident in his own ability, confident in his knowledge of the game and in his ability to share it with his listeners; confident in his love of family, which began with his wife Shirley, his children and grandchildren. Those feelings easily extended to his Blue Jays family as well. 

There was a turning point in my relationship with Tom Cheek that began the first time that we played golf together as part of a Howie Starkman foursome in the Blue Jays’ charity tournament in the late ’90s. If I loved golf and I loved baseball then I could be Tom’s friend. 

Every spring thereafter, I would make sure my golf clubs remained in the trunk of my rental car and if Tom came to Mattick or Grant Field for one of his frequent visits before games started, he would catch my eye, just waggle his hands in the universal sign language of all golfers and I would call the office and tell them I was taking that day off. We would hit the links. 

His money game was called “Wolf” and he would organize the foursomes, the teams and do a play-by play after every drive, updating the options in his familiar baritone, lending a Fifth-Major air, an absurd importance to the moment, to the point sometimes you just had to laugh. Tom was the best. 

My favourite round of golf with Tom was showing up at the first tee in Dunedin and the other two golfers in the group were Galen Cisco and J.P. Ricciardi, Sr. It was at a time when J.P. Junior was the GM and basically not talking to me. His dad was charming and competent with the clubs and we had a great day. I imagined him getting home and telling his son what a great golf companion that Griffin guy was. Tom was the best. 

There was another time that we were just a threesome and hooked up on the third tee with a young hotshot playing by himself. The 30-something stud (young is a relative thing) strutted about and bragged about his golf game and how far he could hit the ball and his handicap and how much his friends admired him. Very quietly as we reached the tee of a par four dogleg left, Tom said “I’ll bet my friend can outdrive you.” I looked around quickly and Tom was looking at me. He smiled. 

The kid looked as worried as Tom seemed confident and with a modest 10 bucks or something like that on the line, the kid cranked one down the middle turning left and bounding for an extra 20 yards. It was later that his own problems started that ended his life prematurely on Oct. 9, 2005. I remember the saddest I was with Tom. It was spring training of 2005 and the Jays were on radio from Dunedin Stadium. A scaled-down version would weigh about 44 pounds less and would not have a Performance mode, but could reduce fuel consumption up to 30 percent. In Performance mode, the computer keeps the KERS at a minimum of 50 percent power for immediate response. At full tilt, Volvo says it can add a boost of up to 80 horsepower and knock 1.5 seconds off a four-cylinder turbo S60's 0-to-60 mph time, making it as quick as Volvo's turbocharged six-cylinder model. Altogether, the boost lasts about five to six seconds with a full "charge," and the flywheel will spin down from top speed to a stop in roughly 30 minutes if you don't use it. 

Driving it really isn't all that different from driving any other hybrid. Best practice is to brake early and moderately, enough to get a good charge but not so hard as to firmly engage the regular brakes. You know in the back of your head that, unlike a battery, you can't store the energy you just recovered for later. The longer you sit, the more energy you lose, so you have this urge to use it again immediately, lest you lose it. Since it spins up so quickly, there's no real need to try to conserve it or worry that it won't be there the next time you want it. The actual sensation isn't really any different than a traditional hybrid, either. There's an obvious drag on the car when you dip into the brake pedal and activate the regenerative braking. 

When accelerating, there's a mild but firm push from behind, a feeling of power delivery as smooth and constant as an electric motor. It tapers off about the time the gasoline engine is coming into the meat of its powerband, so there's no obvious trade-off or plateau in power. The only real oddity is the difference in how the two motors deliver power. The KERS reacts immediately with strong, linear power, while the gasoline engine takes half a beat to respond. When you stomp on the gas, you get a smooth, linear shove from the rear of the car first, then a second later, a growing tug from the front as the gasoline engine wakes up and overpowers the KERS. Volvo engineers say they're happy with the power delivery as it is now, but they could program it to make the two react in unison if customers don't like it. 

Performance mode is a bit more in your face. Getting the flywheel up to 50 percent power and keeping it there requires the KERS to engage while you're driving, not just while you're braking, so you feel a slight drag from the rear, like pulling a trailer. On a winding road, though, it shines. As you approach a corner, you spin up the flywheel under braking, make your turn, and get a burst of power as you exit.More than 80 standard commercial and granitetiles exist to quickly and efficiently clean pans. Writes Padilla: “If the Philippine government does not provide access to free contraceptives, many poor Filipino women will continue to have unintended pregnancies, die from pregnancy and childbirth complications, and get pregnant at an early age and stop schooling. 

“Blind adherence to dogma that translates to religious refusals in the provision of access to contraceptive information, supplies and services has grave consequences on women’s right to life and health. Without pain of any penalty, reproductive rights violations will surely be prevalent.”

Costly Change Could Lower Levels

The petition calls for the EPA to instead require the use of pharmaceutical-grade sodium fluoride in water fluoridation, which is the addition of fluoride to drinking water for the purpose of preventing cavities. 

Fluorosilicic acid is often contaminated with arsenic, and recent research has linked the arsenic from fluorosilicic acid in drinking water to as many as 1,800 extra cases of cancer yearly in the United States, said William Hirzy, a chemistry researcher American University in Washington, D.C. Hirzy, who worked at the EPA for 27 years, submitted the petition. 

The study and petition grew out of what researchers believe is a lack of regulation and understanding of chemicals used in fluoridation, Hirzy said. Fluorosilicic acid has been shown to contain the carcinogens arsenic and lead, and to leach lead from water pipes, he said. 

n the study, published in February in the journal Environmental Science and Policy, Hirzy and co-authors estimated that putting pharmaceutical-grade sodium fluoride into the water supply would reduce the amount of arsenic in drinking water by 99 percent. The EPA limits levels of arsenic in drinking water to 10 parts per billion. Hirzy said that the researchers, in calculating the number of U.S. cancer cases yearly linked with arsenic in fluorosilicic acid, used the EPA's own risk assessment data.Experts not involved with Hirzy's study agreed with its findings. 

"I think this is a reasonable study, and that they haven't inflated anything," said Kathleen Thiessen, a senior scientist at SENES Oak Ridge Inc., a health and environmental risk assessment company.An EPA scientist, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak to the press, said the study is the first to perform a risk assessment on this arsenic source, which "should have been done" already. He said he "didn't dispute anything" in the paper, and said the cost estimates were reasonable. 

While the EPA performs risk assessments for most contaminants in public water supplies, it doesn't oversee the addition of chemicals used in fluoridation, according to the agency — a policy that Hirzy said doesn't make sense. Under the Toxic Substances Control Act, the EPA has the authority to regulate or ban almost any substance — including fluorosilicic acid — that poses an "unreasonable risk" to public health, he said.

Together, these compounds (called silicofluorides) provide fluoride to 90 percent of U.S. drinking water systems that are fluoridated, serving about 150 million people, Miller said. 

Fluoridation was introduced in 1945, and the early tests of its effects were done with sodium fluoride, largely derived from the aluminum smelting industry, Hirzy said. Fluorosilicic acid wasn't used to fluoridate water supplies until after 1951, when water fluoridation became a goal of the U.S. Public Health Service. The health effects of fluorosilicicacid haven't been widely tested, according to a 2006 report on fluoride by the National Research Council. Mosaic, one of the companies that sells fluorosilicic acid to water utilities around the country, Miller said, lists the substance as hightly corrosive. The undiluted acid can eat through glass.

The company now views itself as the Adobe of augmented reality because it offers tools for designing these experiences, instead of just a platform to share them. 

One of the first big breaks for DAQRI, which recently raised $15 million to increase its engineering, design and sales teams, was signing a partnership with printer Quad/Graphics in 2011. The entire computer network of a Cook County department was shut down for nearly two weeks last month after a virus infected the system, NBC5 Investigates and The Better Government Association have learned.The Cook County Department of Highway and Transportation is responsible for maintaining hundreds of miles of local highways. But it was the Information Superhighway which proved to be the departments recent undoing: NBC5 and the BGA have learned that someone C possibly a county employee surfing the Internet or using a flash drive from home C allowed a virus to enter the departments servers at its downtown offices in Chicago at 69 West Washington St. The virus quickly spread to all of the departments computers C both downtown and at remote sites -- renaming files and hiding legitimate work content.

However, majority of those surveyed, who are on the cusp of being the islands next generation of workers, are not interested in these lines of work.

Of the total 2,956 respondents, the results show that only 165 students want to be in the food preparation and serving related field. In comparison, 474 respondents want to be in protective service, which includes fields such as police and investigation agents.Another notable result is that only 60 students out of the nearly 3,000 respondents are willing to work in construction with.

At Marianas High School, out of 940 respondents, a total of 511or 54 percentsay they want to pursue postsecondary education and have no plans of immediately working in any of the given occupational opportunities.Generating the most interest among the occupational choices was protective service where 127 studentsor 14 percentsay they want to work in the future.

Those who reported that they want to work in installation, maintenance, and repair work totaled 83 studentsa mere 9 percent. Other areas like business and financial operations got only 7 percent while food preparation and serving related got a minuscule 4 percent, Management had 3 percent; sales, 3 percent; and construction and building/ground maintenance, 1 percent each.

At Saipan Southern High School, out of the 398 respondents, a large bulk of 181 studentsor 45 percentsay they will pursue college; 63 students (16 percent) want to be in protective services; 40 respondents said they want to work in business and financial operations; while 26 students want to work in the field of management.
