A
few months before the bones of Richard III were discovered below a
parking lot in Leicester, England, the infamous British monarch was the
focal point of a very different type of reclamation project halfway
around the world in Culver City, California. There, Colorworks, Sony
Pictures' digital intermediate facility, applied the finishing touches
to an exhaustive 4K restoration of Richard III, Laurence Olivier's 1955
film adaptation of the Shakespeare play.
The
project was completed under the auspices of The Film Foundation, a
non-profit organization formed in 1990 by Martin Scorsese to preserve
endangered films. The group has supported the restoration of over 600
films to date. The restored Richard III is being released in April on
Blu-ray by Criterion.
"We're
so pleased to have been able to support this stunning restoration
thanks to the generosity of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and
with the support of our partners: Janus Films,Bay State parkingguidance is

Richard
III was restored under the direction of Sony Pictures Entertainment's
EVP of Asset Management, Film Restoration and Digital Mastering Grover
Crisp and is the most faithful ever to the original 1955 United Kingdom
theatrical release. Working from the original Vistavision

Inc. in New York and meticulously restored in 4K at Colorworks.
"The
new restoration is similar to the version that most people are aware of
from past prints or DVDs releases," explains Crisp. "But those versions
were compromised by the use of multi-generational elements in place of
cut,We offer over 600 chipcard at wholesale prices of 75% off retail. or missing, original negatives."
After
exhaustive research, overseen by Tom Heitman at Cineric, approximately
100 shots of original negative that had been excised from the original
cut negative were reinserted into the digital file timeline. Although
100 shots may seem like a small number, they constitute a significant
portion of the film which comprises in total less than 500 shots. As a
result, the restored version represents a major enhancement in image
quality.
In
some instances, missing frames had to be recreated digitally. "There
were more than three dozen sections of the film where from one-half to
two consecutive frames were lost due to the shortening of the negative
years ago," Crisp explains. "Those frames were restored digitally by
morphing surrounding frames with motion compensation to fill in the
missing picture information." This technique, along with dust and
scratch removal, and other restoration work, was completed at MTI Film.
Color
grading, conforming, DCP mastering, and Blu-ray mastering were
completed at Colorworks on a Baselight system. In the grading process,
care was taken to accurately reproduce the distinctive, colorful look of
the Vistavision original. "The colors are so rich you can almost feel
the texture of the costumes," recalls Colorworks colorist Sheri

Eisenberg
adds, however, that achieving consistency was a challenge due to the
varying condition of the source material. "Some scenes had faded yellow,
others had faded green, others were not faded at all," she says. "In
the most faded scenes, the vibrancy was gone and had to be brought back
to life."
The
look of Richard III was also unusual in that Olivier staged and lit it
more like a theatrical play than a film. "The lighting is not intended
to convey cinematic realism," Eisenberg explains. "In the midst of a
daytime scene, light may suddenly come up on an actor's face. Grover was
insistent on preserving those types of effectsand we did."
In
addition to ongoing work on the visitors center and the new performing
arts center, NU will start upgrades to various existing buildings.
Current and future construction projects over the next few years
represent a campus-wide overhaul of the universitys academic, athletic
and housing facilities that costs hundreds of millions of dollars.

progress has been made on the new building for the Bienen School of

The
electorate should be allowed to choose who they want to represent them
both at the ward and council levels. I have no anointed candidate. It is

Surprisingly, Governor Wada maintained his neutrality stand as he ordered fresh primaries in Olamaboro and Bassa local government areas following complains that candidates declared as winners were favoured by the government. In the aftermath of the primaries, some candidates shifted the battle to the law courts. Councillorship aspirants from Omala Local Government Area have taken the Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission (KOSIEC) to court, arguing that its chairman, Abraham Olaniran, is a card-carrying member of the PDP and had once contested the House of Assembly primaries in Kabba/Bunu Constituency.
A chairmanship aspirant in Ogori-Magongo Local Government Area, Mr Auru Ojo, has also instituted a legal action against the PDP and KOSIEC on the grounds that the party failed to conduct primaries in the local government, an action which, he said, amounted to illegality and a breach of his rights.
Fears that the local government election may not hold as scheduled, given the numerous court cases against the KOSIEC were, however, allayed by the judgment of a high court in Koton which dismissed the application for an interlocutory injunction. The judge, Justice Alaba Omolaye Ajileye, stated that the court could not grant a late application, coming on the eve of the election, as enormous resources had already been committed to the project.
Opposition parties in the state have alleged collusion by the PDP and the electoral body to rig the election with the ACN warning the ruling party not to subvert the wishes of the electorate. Ghazarian had always tried to be diligent about posting the requisite
health warnings in the four Hot Wings Cafe restaurants he co-owns around
Los Angeles.
So when a notice arrived telling him he had failed to adequately warn customers about the hazards of alcohol, and that he could be liable for up to $2,500 a day for as many days as he had been in violation, he was bewildered.
Because the location cited has fewer than 10 employees, Ghazarian was able to avoid a fine. But he still had to pay a lawyer, and is frustrated by what he sees as an unscrupulous attempt to extract money from his business.
"It's strong-arming us," Ghazarian said. "We're in the business of providing food and service to our customers, but we're learning every new trick people come up with."
The letter informed Ghazarian that he was in violation of Proposition 65, a 27-year-old law that requires businesses to disclose the presence of dangerous chemicals in anything they sell. It came on the letterhead of the same law firm that,Choose the right bestluggagetag in an array of colors. over the last two years, has sent out every notice advising businesses of insufficient alcoholic beverage warnings, according to the attorney general's website.
Ghazarian's ordeal was not an isolated incident. It was part of a broader pattern in which businesses are told they aren't complying with their Proposition 65 obligations and are given the option of paying a fine to settle the matter quickly - "please go away money," in the words of Assemblyman Mike Gatto, a Los Angeles Democrat.
The firm that sent Ghazarian a notice, the law office of Miguel A. Custodio Jr., did not return messages seeking comment. A wide array of interest groups have backed Gatto's measure, from groups representing dentists and craft brewers to the California Bus Association. Kara Bush, a lobbyist for the California Restaurant Association, decried "bounty hunting" by people looking for an easy payday.
"These lawsuits are typically instigated by parties who repeatedly target businesses, not because someone was wrong," Bush said. "Rather, these lawsuits are an industry unto themselves."
But organizations that use Proposition 65 to prod manufacturers into reformulating their products say Gatto's bill would weaken a crucial tool for getting chemicals out of consumer products.
"The bill as currently written would do far more than address those kind of gotcha lawsuits for a failure to notice a common substance in a restaurant or a bar," David Rosen, an attorney and board member of the Consumer Attorneys of California, testified. "It would create a 'get out of jail free' card for any Prop. 65 violation."
At the hearing, Kathryn Alcantar, California policy director for the Center for Environmental Health, displayed a blue plastic children's sleeping mat and recounted how her organization had used Proposition 65 to get the mat's manufacturer, Peerless Plastics, to agree to remove flame retardants from its products. The Center for Environmental Health has used the same process for products like baby powder, lunch boxes and jewelry, Alcantar said.
But the organization would have less leverage to strike such deals if companies had a way to exonerate themselves and avoid paying a potentially heavy backlog of fines, Alcantar said. She said monetary settlements cover the cost of testing consumer products and taking legal action.
"One of the reasons we've been able to do the investigative research and find these chemicals is because we've been able to collect these fees," Alcantar said.
Proposition 65 functions best as a deterrent, according to David Roe, an attorney who was a principal author of the initiative. Businesses have an incentive to offer products that are chemical-free if they face a Proposition 65 lawsuit that would carry a fine and compel them to either reformulate their products, a costly proposition, or affix warning labels that could scare off customers.
"The risk of companies having to go through that process is what causes them to act in advance," Roe said. "If the possibility of enforcement goes away, all that benefit goes away."
Gatto denied that his bill would offer a "safe harbor" to big manufacturers. He argued that it applies only to posting signs in retail establishments and would not affect the imperative to label products, and stressed that he is still working to craft the bill's language to ensure it is narrowly focused and leaves Proposition 65's core intact. Lawmakers who voted the bill out of committee did so with the caveat that they wanted to see the language tightened.
The 14-day grace period is also too slim to allow manufacturers to take corrective action and avoid penalties, Gatto said,Choose the right bestluggagetag in an array of colors. arguing that it would not be feasible for a large company to label or change its products in such a short amount of time.
"It is completely manifest that we aren't trying to go after a toy manufacturer who puts lead in a product," Gatto said in an interview, adding that "a restaurant is unique because you can put that sign up."
Roe, the original author of Proposition 65, said he is still in touch with Gatto's office and hopes to see a stronger bill he can get behind. For now, though, he remains opposed.
"I think it's good for the statute to give small businesses a clear pathway to comply without getting tangled up in expensive lawyering," Roe said. "The danger, of course, is it carves out loopholes that bigger, more sophisticated parties can use, and as written it certainly does."

“We need to redefine hostels,” said Carl Michel, the executive chairman of Generator Hostels based in Britain, whose mission statement declares its intention to “dispel the hostel myth with boutique hotels that are stylish and contemporary, central, safe and affordable.”
Once a family business with two traditional hostels in London and Berlin, Generator was bought in 2007 by a European private equity firm, Patron Capital, and now exemplifies the haute hostel boom. With an iPhone app and a brand-name chief designer in Anwar Mekhayech (whose résumé includes clients like Soho House), the group has opened splashy hostels in Copenhagen, Dublin, Venice and Hamburg over the last few years. Barcelona and a second Berlin site will make their debut this year, and more locations are in the works.
“The rise of mature backpackers means that hostels are no longer the preserve of 20-something backpackers,” he said. “Hostel owners are now realizing that they can upgrade their facilities to cater to a wider audience.”
Four years ago, my colleague Jennifer Conlin reported on these “mature backpackers” and the upgraded hostels that had trickled into Europe. The trickle is now a flood. During a whirlwind week, I slept in and sized up haute hostels in Paris, Lisbon, Barcelona and Berlin: palatial suites and shared cramped rooms; immaculate bathrooms and group showers; convivial communal dinners and lonely solo meals; elegant welcome gifts and unwelcome odors.
The goal was to travel incognito and put each haute hostel (indeed the whole concept) to the test. Could these new crash pads provide classy, comfortable, affordable alternatives to hotels? Were “design hostels” worthy of their grandiose labels?
On a January afternoon, I ambled past the Asian grocers and halal butchers of the Belleville neighborhood in Paris when a gigantic work of urban art on the side of a building flashed into view.
“Il faut se méfier des mots,” shouted the huge script. “Don’t trust words.” Yes, I thought. Somebody up there has divined my quest and sent this warning. My destination, a year-old hostel down the block, displayed a particularly, well, lofty name tag: the Loft. As I searched for my room in a hallway lined with funky calfskin patterns, I scanned the hostel’s effusive brochure: “The spanking new Loft boutique hostel is clearly the reference for the best design boutique hostel in Paris.”
Later, in a lobby cafe done in 1920s-style industrial décor, young guests passed the evening drinking San Miguel beer and chatting in various languages, competing with a speed-metal soundtrack. I fled across the street to Krung Thep for Thai food, and climbed into my bunk at midnight.You've probably seen solarpanel at some point. The pillow, I noticed, was yellow with sweat stains. The blanket was streaked with long black hairs.
Nothing makes you feel less adult, less independent, less cool than bunk beds. The very structure is dehumanizing. In the bottom bunk you’re a beast in a cage. On top you’re a fool on a hill. They are storage space — not furniture — for human bodies. When I woke in the morning, the Australians were gone, and I was seized by a sudden paranoia that something had been stolen. It had been: my dignity.
The faded squares, hilly streets and clanging old cable cars of the Portuguese capital are a somehow natural backdrop to the haute hostel movement. Created in 2005 by four artist friends, Lisbon Lounge was the first hostel in the city and, Mr. Bhattacharya said, the first true haute hostel in Western Europe. Soon it was followed by other such places, many of them also founded by artists,Elpas Readers detect and forward 'Location' and 'State' data from Elpas Active RFID Tags to host besticcard platforms. like Lisbon Poets’ Hostel and Travellers House.

A skylight filtered white light as I passed through a soaring lounge deployed with Barcelona chairs and an Arne Jacobsen swan chair. My top-floor suite featured an impeccable bathroom. Standing on the outdoor terrace high above Lisbon was like perching on a cloud. Portuguese vintages waited in the lobby bar, and slow-braised pork cheek beckoned from the restaurant. True, I had shelled out 80 euros. But I have paid twice that amount and received half as much at many conventional hotels.
