JEA worker injured in dog attack

Jackson Energy Authority meter reader Randell Surratt was injured on the job Tuesday morning when a chained dog broke free and attacked him.

A Jackson Police Department incident report said the bite marks on Surratt’s stomach and legs were “severe lacerations.”

Surratt went to 222 Eastview Ave. and was reading the meter there when a dog chained to a pole pulled the pole loose and charged him, the police report said.

In the report, the owner of the dog,AeroScout is the market leader for rtls solutions and provide complete wireless asset tracking and monitoring. Jerry Bowers, said the dog was chained up on his front porch. The report said the pole the dog was chained to was not properly secured to the ground.

A fellow employee transported Surratt to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital emergency room for treatment for the dog bites, and police followed up with Surratt at the hospital to take his statements about the incident, the report said.

Jackson Energy Authority public relations coordinator Janet Wilbanks said Wednesday that a JEA safety coordinator is investigating the incident for the utility.

“JEA’s meter readers perform an exceptional service; reading meters with a high degree of accuracy in a wide variety of circumstances and conditions,” she said. “A review of the circumstances surrounding this event is pending investigation.”

Animal and Rabies Control took the dog and checked its papers, which is standard procedure, according to the police report.
