Efficient Threading of Oil Field Parts

Threading oil field parts is one of the most demanding metalworking challenges. Between the hostile conditions in the oil field that put high demands on the equipment and the catastrophic outcomes that can result from just minute discrepancies in production, precision manufacturing of oil field parts is essential. Part failure is simply not an option.

Many of the key components of an oil extrusion operation are threaded parts, including blowout preventers, valves, pumps, pump jacks, compressors, and gears. If any one of these parts fails, it could jeopardize the entire operation.

There are many factors in manufacturing parts for the oil industry, which make chip evacuation difficult. For instance, the scale and complex shape of components can be problematic for monitoring and clearing taps of chips that tend to bird nest around the tap’s shank. To withstand the harsh environment of the oil field, manufacturing of many of the parts are in 4140 and 4340 grades of steel, which produce long continuous chip formations when tapped. Production expectations are another challenge manufacturers must overcome. Because of the high cost of the components, it is important to ensure process consistency to minimize the potential of re-work or scrap. Many parts are also safety critical components, which demand true-to-gauge threads with high surface quality, so there is little room for error. Then there are the tight delivery schedules to meet.
